In 1976, a group of concerned residents around Shaker Square formed Friends of Shaker Square (FOSS) to support and promote the Shaker Square commercial district and its local merchants. Early efforts included community-wide events such as the Very Square Affair, antique car shows, and holiday lighting celebrations that helped bring residents and businesses together.

In 1980, Shaker Square was designated a Historic District by the City of Cleveland and later listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance as a national landmark.

As the organization grew, its mission expanded beyond events and promotion into broader community development. In 2000, FOSS became the Shaker Square Area Development Corporation (SHAD), reflecting a deeper commitment to neighborhood advocacy, housing stability, and community revitalization.

This included work such as property development (including Livingston Park Apartments), code enforcement support, and home improvement assistance for residents.

Today, Shaker Square Collaborative focuses on advocacy, communication, and neighborhood support across the Shaker Square area and its surrounding communities.

Through its award-winning quarterly publication, The Connection, keeps residents, businesses, and stakeholders informed and engaged.
